Laser hair removal is the permanent reduction of unwanted hair using laser energy. Both men and women can undergo this treatment and all areas of the body can be treated except for the hair in the nose, in the ear and around the eyebrows.
Laser energy is attracted to the pigment (color) of the hair follicle that resides under the skin. Treated follicles will produce thinner or no hair at all after several treatments. Each treatment is done during the growth phase of the hair, which usually includes about 20% of the hair at any one time. Of these hairs, between 75% to 90% are destroyed by the laser. This is why multiple treatments are usually required. The destroyed hair falls out within 1-2 weeks. The average number of treatments is 6 to 8 but more may be needed if the hair is particularly dense or if there is a hormonal disorder (as diagnosed by Dr. Verbeeten during the consultation). Light red, white or gray hair does not respond to laser hair removal. Laser hair removal treatments require no downtime, cause virtually no discomfort and the sessions can take between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on hair density and size of area treated. Discounts are available for packages of 3 or 6 and additional discounts are available for more than one area done on the same visit.
All lasers on the market are based on the same principle but the end result is often not comparable. Treatment efficacy is directly related to the experience of the provider who uses the laser safely and effectively.
